New Members!
This upcoming Sunday, we will be receiving new members. This is always so great. A few of them are going to be sharing their own stories of faith and why being a member at Trinity is important to them. One of the five is doing her “profession of faith” for the first time, which means she is affirming the vows that her parents made when she was baptized as a child. She is publicly declaring her faith in Christ as her Lord and Saviour – what an awesome thing.
For some, church membership is a strange. At Trinity we see it as a way of saying “I’m committed to following Christ with this particular group of people.” Its about being in community with other people who are trying to be faithful as well. Its recognizing that the life of following Jesus is not a life in isolation, but a life connected.
Some will say, we’re all connected anyway – that you don’t need to be a member to be part of the Church, or to be “in Christ.” In some ways that’s true, but I like to challenge people to really ask themselves what their hesitation is in becoming a member of a congregation. Because, if you are committed to Christ, and committed to the group of people that you’re following Christ with, then why wouldn’t you stand up and tell them that you are in fact committed to Jesus and to them? If you’re not ready for the commitment, then don’t make it, but if you’ve already made the commitment in your heart, maybe its time to tell everyone and make it official.
Sunday’s going to be great!
